Copper roofing nails are also known as slating nails. These fasteners provide a very strong hold for roofing and decking materials. There are few things to note about these sturdy nails before proceeding with your DIY roofing or decking project.
As with most construction materials, there are various sizes of these nails made from copper. You will need to evaluate your project to determine the size of fastener you need. Sizes can range considerably, the most common sizes being between three-fourths of an inch to three inches or more long.
There are two main types of copper roofing nails – there are nails that are smooth and there are nails that have an annual ring shank. Many experts choose the ring shank for a stronger holding power in plywood or other woods. The smooth shank versions are made from smooth copper wire with a diamond shaped point at the tip. A ring shank nail is usually preferred for slate or tile clay.
In order to choose the correct nail length for your project, you will need to do a little calculating. First, measure the thickness of your tile, metal or wood. Once you have that measurement, just add one inch to twice the thickness. With that measurement, you are ready to purchase the nails and begin your project.
