Copper Gutter Brackets

Copper gutter brackets are the mounting and support system that holds your copper gutters up. Some cut rate installers will try to tell you that you can get away with aluminum or even plastic mountings, but the fact of the matter is that the performance of those materials just will not hold up over the long run. There are a few reasons for this which we will cover here.

Firstly, thermal expansion is an issue if you install copper gutters but don’t also install copper gutter brackets. All materials expand as they are heated, and contract as they cool down. This means your gutters are actually bigger at 2pm in July than they are at 4am in January due simply to their temperature. If you have two materials, such as a plastic and a metal, which have different expansion rates but are bonded together, it can cause problems. For starters, it creates a stress point in the system whenever it heats or cools. This stress point can weaken and break; or it can simply warp. Either way, the gutter pulls away from the eaves and starts letting the water leak through.

The more subtle reason that you want to use copper gutter brackets with a copper gutter installation is durability. Plastic and aluminum brackets are just fine if you are installing a typical gutter system meant to last about a decade. However copper gutters are meant to last a lifetime, quite literally they can last 100 years or more without needing to be replaced. This is because of the patina that forms on copper exposed to the elements. The patina forms a turtle shell-like barrier against corrosion that actually makes aged copper more durable as it ages. If your brackets are made from another material, they will weaken as they age and eventually fail, defeating the purpose of having a gutter that lasts a lifetime.
